Over 120,000 Public Service Alliance of Canada members are on strike since Wednesday, but only 42,421 of them actually cast a ballot

But a federal government employee filed a complaint on April 11 to the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board asking the tribunal to invalidate PSAC’s strike vote, alleging that he was unable to vote because the union shortened the voting period by eight days without his knowledge.

“The irregularities are of significant concern, and with different numbers, they could have resulted in the invalidation of the strike vote,” reads the ruling. The key issue highlighted by the complainant and the board is a sudden shortening of the voting period by PSAC as well as a 5,000-person cap on the number of members who could attend any one of many online voting sessions.

“The elimination of eight days of voting is significant. Bargaining unit members might have wanted to wait until the end of the voting period before casting their vote, so as to have the most current information when making their decision,” the board noted in its ruling. But the board said that none of it was clear enough and that the information was often buried in a document, email or webpage.
