Exclusive: Barbie star Simu Liu shares some insight on how the movie will put the 'final nail in the coffin' of the gendered toys debate for children.
With the movie promising to be for those who love and hate the iconic doll, Simu Liu explains how the Barbie movie will put an end to the gendered toys debate. Development on a Barbie live-action movie has lingered in limbo for over a decade, with Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway having been attached or having been in talks to star at various points and a number of writers and directors approached. I didn't really have a relationship with Barbie in the past, you know? I don't know about you, but I grew up in a society where traditional gender norms were pretty heavily enforced and were pretty prevalent. [We] were taught from a very young age, "Boys don't play with that, and, "Boys don't wear pink." Colors became gendered; toys became gendered — all of these rules were imposed on us. Barbie Marks A New Era For Mattel Much of the cast behind Barbie has championed Gerwig's subversive vision for the movie, with the co-writer/director and Robbie even recalling their fears that Mattel would shut the project down for its critiques of the company and toyline. With Gerwig and Robbie subsequently praising Mattel's creative involvement in the movie and allowing them to forge ahead with their self-aware take, it marks a promising sign for their future on screen.
