Greta Gerwig\u0027s Barbie is intelligent, funny and unexpectedly emotional, while Christopher Nolan\u0027s Oppenheimer combines psychology, physics
Watching it all go down, I found myself appalled by the ladies’ loss of autonomy, even as I cheered the downtrodden dudes’ desire for more. Yes, I was Ken-flicted., her hand so firmly on the authorial tiller in a way that so few directors these days manage any more.
Or take it from Barbie herself, who “just wants to get through the day feeling kinda good about herself.” Because don’t we all?Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer.Quantum subatomic theory is notoriously difficult to explain. So too are the inner workings of the human heart. So Christopher Nolan has set himself a tall order by trying to do both in Oppenheimer, a sprawling biopic that combines psychology and physics over its three-hour runtime.
We first meet J. Robert Oppenheimer before the war, an awkward student bouncing around Europe, and a veritable black hole pulling in whatever knowledge he can find on the new physics. And, in one of the film’s first this-really-happened moments, he did try to poison one of his teachers with a cyanide-laced apple. Though Nolan wrings a little more drama out of the incident by having physicist Niels Bohr almost take a bite.
Then there’s the “standard” story of the creation of the atomic bomb, featuring a who’s who of physicists racing against the clock to unlock the destructive power of the atom, while somewhere off-screen the might of America’s military-industrial complex is mining and refining uranium and plutonium as quickly as it can. And further afield, scattered reports of the Nazis’ similar attempts.
Benny Safdie plays Edward Teller, the “father of the hydrogen bomb,” delivering one of the film’s scattered moments of levity when he acknowledges that his creation will need a small fission bomb to trigger its fusion reaction, so they’ll need to build one of those first.Article content
