Blockbusters are back, baby – and they’re better than ever 🖋️ _e_watkins for ipaperviews
The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer in the same weekend have been part of my social circle’s conversation for weeks in a way that I can’t remember happening with a film since, well, ever.
Last weekend, the cinematic earth rumbled beneath the might of two box office titans: Greta Gerwig’s pink-party. After a pandemic and an audience out of practice with in-person screenings, the unlikely duo seems to have prised the film industry from the jaws of streaming, and not a moment too soon. As one of the maximalists who decided to see both in one day, I for one am delighted to pronounce cinema – and the real world along with it – alive and well.
Certainly, the numbers bear that out: 22 and 23 July was the highest earning weekend since 2019, withand heralding the biggest US box office opening for a female director ever. If 2020 was the year that we all went inside and tearfully watched things on our laptops, 2023 is the year that cinephiles have trooped out of their homes and back into theatres in a way that feels definitive.
