The former president announced he was backing Biden a day after Bernie Sanders did the same.
WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama endorsed presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in a video message on Tuesday.
“We need you in the White House. I will do all that I can to see that that happens, Joe,” Sanders said in a live-streamed conversation between the two erstwhile rivals. “And I know he’ll surround himself with good people — experts, scientists, military officials who actually know how to run the government and care about doing a good job running the government, and know how to work with our allies, and who will always put the American people’s interests above their own.”
Story continuesBiden, who has been campaigning remotely from his home state of Delaware, has frequently criticized President Trump’s handling of the outbreak. But in his endorsement of Biden, Obama lauded Sanders as an “American original” who is “critical in moving America in a direction of progress and hope.”
Obama is perhaps the most famous and popular Democrat in the country. By the time he left office in 2017, 59 percent of Americans said they approved of the job he was doing as president, according to Gallup.
