After a record coronavirus spike, the governor has reversed some reopening measures.
, according to the Austin American-Statesman, demanding that Abbott and the state allow bars to remain open, claiming that his emergency order is unconstitutional.
Despite an earlier reluctance to do so, Abbott ordered the reversal of some reopening measures last week, ordering bars to and lowering restaurant capacity back down to 50%, instead of the 75% it was allowed at for much of June.how fast he allowed bars to reopen, which he stated has contributed to the record increase in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations over the past two weeks.
The lawsuit says that Abbott unfairly singled out bars, allowing businesses like barber shops and nail salons to stay open, while also claiming he overstepped his authority by suspending state laws, which is a power reserved for the state legislature. The lawsuit was filed in Travis County District Court by Houston-based attorney Jared Woodfill, the former longtime chairman of the Harris County Republican Party.challenging the governor’s earlier executive orders.“Will we continue to allow Defendants to take away our liberties and destroy the economy – where does it stop?” the lawsuit says.Texas was largely spared the serious effects some parts of the U.S.
