Kachafanas found a more receptive council in 2022, though nothing had been officially formalized following his presentation at city hall. CHRIS CONNORS/CAPE BRETON POST FILEOn March 4, Kachafanas was on hand as Sydney-Victoria MP Jaime Battiste, speaking on behalf of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Sean Fraser, announced $2,173,097 in funding for Tomorrow’s Legends. which would go toward retrofitting the 25,000-square-foot complex, dubbed Legends Arena.
Then during a March 26 council meeting, Kirk Durning, CBRM’s director of parks, recreation, building and facilities, passed on a request from Tomorrow’s Legends to have the facility property transferred to the group, and have CBRM declare the property as surplus and hold a public hearing to determine any objections to selling the property for $1.
“We want to retain the parking for the surrounding park assets in the area — the baseball fields and the pleasure park area,” he said.
