Bald Range Wildfire Destroyed Faulder Homes as BC Parties Spar Over Fire Plans
Bald Range Wildfire, Faulder, British Columbia

The Bald Range wildfire destroyed over 100 properties in Faulder on Aug. 7, prompting BC Conservatives to promise a $400-million water bomber fleet and the NDP to match Red Cross donations.

The Bald Range wildfire swept through Faulder, British Columbia, on Aug. 7, destroying more than one hundred properties, according to officials. The fast-moving blaze left charred metal and heaps of ash where homes once stood, including the residence of Joel Patan, who said no family in the province should endure what his community went through.

Patan spoke on Friday in front of the remains of his home, which provided the backdrop for the B.C. Conservative leader to promise a wildfire action plan if his party forms government. The NDP also announced new support for families impacted by recent wildfires, setting up a political contest over how the province should prepare for and recover from increasingly destructive fire seasons.

BC Conservatives Promise Water Bombers

Lorne Doerkson, leader of the B.C. Conservatives, said the problem is a broken bureaucratic system that repeatedly plagues the province. He described forestry treatments, controlled burns and emergency responses as isolated silos that fail to work together.

The Conservative plan includes clearing dangerous forest fuels around communities, increasing controlled burns and investing in water bombers. Doerkson said B.C. does not currently own any aircraft to fight fires and promised a $400-million investment to purchase a fleet of water bombers, creating a dedicated capacity to fight wildfires every single year.

Doerkson said that over the past decade, more than seven million hectares in B.C. have burned, pushing firefighting costs into the billions. He argued that a more coordinated approach is needed to protect communities like Faulder.

NDP Matches Red Cross Donations

NDP leader David Eby, speaking in Kelowna, announced that the province will match Red Cross donations with provincial funding. The new program, with a specific focus on uninsured properties, provides funds designed to offer longer-term support as people recover and rebuild.

Eby called it material and significant support for communities struggling with the impact of wildfire. He also said the government will be there for fire response and the requirements around rebuilding.

Patan, whose property was insured, said there are many losses not covered by insurance. He said the one-time payment of $2,000 offered by the Red Cross will not go far for families who have nothing, describing it as a drop in the bucket and calling for something of more substance.

Faulder Residents Seek Training and Equipment

In Patan’s community, residents are calling for government help for training and equipment so they can fight small fires when they spot them. The Conservative leader said he would support the initiative through a wildfire innovation fund his party would create if elected, adding that he wants such funds accessible for exactly these types of programs.

It is estimated that about 30 per cent of those whose homes burned in Faulder did not have insurance. The Bald Range wildfire remains a stark example of the growing challenge facing British Columbia, where worsening fire seasons have destroyed homes, displaced residents and strained emergency resources.

Both parties are now trying to convince voters that they have the right approach to wildfire prevention, response and recovery. The debate in Faulder highlights the human cost behind the statistics as residents sift through ash and wait for support that many say cannot come soon enough.
