The Cowichan Lake Valley Regional District (CVRD) has significantly expanded Bald Mountain Park with a $2.5 million land acquisition, adding 75 hectares to the existing 350 hectares. This purchase, the largest by the CVRD since its park acquisition service began, protects valuable wildlife habitat and expands recreational opportunities for the community.
Bald Mountain Park is expanding by 75 hectares, thanks to a $2.5 million land purchase by the Cowichan Lake Valley Regional District (CVRD) announced on Friday. This acquisition, the largest park land purchase by the CVRD since its regional parkland acquisition service began in 2008, will increase the park's total size to approximately 425 hectares. The CVRD acquired the land from Cowichan Lake Holdings Ltd., owner of the Woodland Shores development.
This purchase protects approximately 850 meters of lakefront foreshore and the emerging habitat values of the reforested upland area, providing a home for a variety of wildlife species. Bald Mountain Park, located on the eastern end of Cowichan Lake, primarily consists of mountainous terrain. The newly acquired 75 hectares adds a section of lowland bench area between Marble Bay Road and the north arm of Cowichan Lake. This lowland has been a popular hiking spot and a frequently used area for Scouts Canada through their Camp Woodland rustic group campsite on the north arm of Cowichan Lake. Since 2023, the park's main trail has seen approximately 11,000 visitors, making it a popular destination in the Cowichan region. The acquisition included a donation of a portion of the land worth approximately $800,000, as the purchase price was significantly below the current appraised market value. The $2.5 million purchase was included in the CVRD's recently released 2025 draft annual budget. Information about the management and planned improvements for this expanded park will be available on the CVRD website.
