The Panthers on Monday named Mayfield their Week 1 starter over incumbent Sam Darnold.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Baker Mayfield will start the Browns opener Sept. 11, but he’ll be in Carolina blue instead of his old, familiar orange and brown.
Traded to the Panthers on July 6 for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024 that can improve to a fourth, Mayfield is receiving $10.5 million from the Browns to play for the Panthers this season and try to beat them in the opener. Asked if he holds a grudge against the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2018 and replaced him this season with Deshaun Watson, he said with a grin, “I try not to.”He acknowledged that emotions will be running high when the Browns come to town. Of course, it will be Jacoby Brissett under center for Cleveland and not Watson, who’s been suspended the first 11 games of the season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
