The historical society has dubbed the Nucleus the “Bad Luck Barquentine” based the vessel’s checkered history of accidents.

Another ship, the S.S. Union, came upon the Nucleus crew in a lifeboat, struggling against the waves. However, rather than saving the stricken sailors, the Union carried on. Last summer, the society put a remotely operated vehicle down to try to identify the wreck they had noticed on sonar the year prior. They found a Civil War-era debris field and a wreck matching the measurements of the Nucleus.
“We can’t overlook the vessel’s checkered past,” said historical society director Bruce Lynn. “The wreck site is littered with shovels, too, and a few dinner plates, which speaks to their work and shipboard life.”
