‘Bad batch’ of street drugs pushes opioid overdoses to record level in Calgary yyc
Brandy Myette, the provincial outreach manager for AAWEAR, says her teams have given out more than 200 naloxone kits since last Thursday — typically, that number will last them a month.
Myette says Calgary needs more supervised consumption sites, specifically one that allows inhalants. She says a lot of the people they respond to don’t utilize the city’s lone site at the Sheldon Chumir Centre downtown as it doesn’t allow them to smoke, forcing them to alleyways, parking garages and other locations sometimes out of public view.
“We would say that there is — as there often is — a bad batch of substances going around,” she said. “We might just be seeing more toxicity in terms of what the substances are laced with, or the dosage within a substance — which, of course, is not something that’s monitored.” “HSAA has been calling for a solution to this issue for years now as we’ve seen these calls steadily rise. Alberta needs to reinvest in, and expand, harm-reduction services that are proven to save lives.”Article content
