More than 300 students will be getting a bit of help with school supplies this year thanks to the United Way of Pictou County and the generosity of the community.
Abby Bugden packages some school supplies that will be given to students in Pictou County thanks to a United Way of Pictou County program.
Pictou County has one of the highest poverty rates in the region with 26.7 percent of children living in poverty according to the 2021 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Nova Scotia. “Although it’s backpacks for kids, we do go beyond just school supplies as much as we can,” Bugden said. Each backpack filled with supplies costs around $75, but Bugden said the community and businesses stepped up to fill the need.
