BEIJING—China’s rapid technology-sector development was built on workers who were willing to endure a grueling schedule in return for high pay and a shot at becoming the next startup billionaire.
But as growth slows, leading to layoffs and shrinking bonuses, young workers are questioning their commitment to working 12-hour days six days a week, known as “996” in reference to a 9 a.m.-9 p.m workday.
