Based on a series of novels by Volker Kutscher, the 2017 German crime drama series follows police inspector Gereon Rath, who is sent on an important assignment to Berlin to dismantle an extortion ring. As a result, he finds himself trapped in an intricate web of lies, deceit, and corruption.
Set in the late 1920s, the season introduces the viewers to the police inspector from Cologne, Gereon Rath, who is still recuperating from his horrifying experiences of the First World War. Soon, he is dispatched to Berlin, a city then known for its exuberance, to investigate the operation of a pornographic ring controlled by the local mafia.
