The original 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' wasn't in sync with the current MeToo times, so John Legend and Kelly Clarkson teamed up on a new version that empowers women and provides lessons on consent:

“...if I have one more drink?,”In the original version of the song, the lyrics are far less empowering for the woman who is trying to leave:“No cabs to be had out there.”

In another verse, when Clarkson protests, “My mother will worry,” Legend replies, “I’ll call a car and tell them to hurry.” In the original version, the man replies instead, “Beautiful, what’s your hurry?” Despite the controversy surrounding the original lyrics, not everyone felt the song needed an update. Last year, when radio stations began pulling the song from their playlists, they received a significant amount of pushback. When San Francisco radio station KOIT pulled the song, negative feedback began to roll in. So,polled their listeners to determine the fate of the song on their radio station. Seven out of ten listeners wanted the song reinstated.

There can be no question that the song portrays a man pressuring a woman to stay, despite her clear protests that she wants to leave, so why are so many still in favor of the song? Those in favor of the original version say the lyrics represented another era when women were expected to reject a man’s advances whether they actually wanted to or not. Therefore, they suggest the woman may actually be expressing her sexuality in a hidden, era-appropriate way.

In 2014, California’s Governor Brown signed the nation’s first affirmative consent standard for colleges to use in campus sexual assault cases. Under this policy, known as “yes means yes,” consent had to be a voluntary, affirmative, conscious agreement. In other words, the lack of a “no” was no longer sufficient. Both parties had to offer positive consent before engaging in sexual activity. However, getting to this level of consent wasn’t easy.
