A baby was born in a vehicle on the busy Duke Point Highway in Nanaimo, and first responders quickly acted to ensure the safety of the mother and baby. An extension volunteer firefighter, Lt. Jason Devisser, was returning a fire engine to the nearby fire hall when he noticed a frantic driver and provided assistance.
First responders helped stop traffic after a baby was born in a vehicle on the side of a Nanaimo highway.
But Tuesday, the quick response of first responders made it a safe and memorable one, despite the location. Devisser was returning a fire engine back to the nearby fire hall after its yearly mechanical inspection. As he pulled onto the busy Duke Point Highway at 1:30 p.m., his routine trip took a wild turn.
Finding the baby already delivered in the car and now in its mother’s arms, Devisser called for an ambulance and the North Cedar Fire Department, whose crews are trained in delivering babies.“The dad was super calm which was just amazing, the mom was super calm and the baby was crying,” said Devisser.
