Updated: A new out-of-control wildfire in B.C.’s Interior has sparked a mandatory evacuation order for an area west of Highway 97 between Quesnel and Williams Lake.

The City of Fort St. John in northeastern B.C. has rescinded its evacuation alert, as a change in wind direction aided firefighters in preventing two out-of-control wildfires from advancing closer.

Environment Canada says winds there have shifted from northerly to a more easterly direction, pushing both the Stoddart Creek fire and the smaller Red Creek blaze away from the city.Environment Canada says smoke from wildfires in the B.C. Interior is expected to worsen in the coming days, bringing poor air quality and associated health risks.

Observed conditions in Prince George, Williams Lake, Fort St. John and Quesnel show high risk or very high risk readings on the Air Quality Health Index.
