West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund says the fight against the fire isn’t over and residents face another “scary night.”

By Thursday night, local emergency officials had ordered the evacuation of hundreds more homes in the West Kelowna area as the McDougall Creek fire expanded in size by more than 100 times to an area nearly 17 times that of Stanley Park in just 24 hours.

About 1 a.m., emergency officials issued an evacuation order for about 260 properties in the Still Pond area, about eight kilometres north of downtown Kelowna. More evacuation orders in the area were issued Friday morning.West Kelowna resident Jonathan Mackee was one of those who had to flee the fire.

He wishes the fire could have been attacked with water bombers sooner, but he understands how stretched the B.C. Wildfire Service is with more than 300 fires in the province. “Kelowna is on fire,” Kyle Brittain posted on X late Thursday night, with photos and videos of the fires.Article content “We are expecting significant growth and we are expecting our resources to be challenged from North to South,” Cliff Chapman, director of wildfire operations with the B.C. Wildfire Service, said Thursday.
