Cathedral Grove is a popular attraction with locals and tourists as some of the giant Douglas fir trees are more than 800 years old.

Kimberly Kelly, a fire information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service, said firefighters are concerned about the hot and dry weather in the region and said efforts are hampered by the steep terrain. She added the highway remains closed because wildfire debris is raining down on the road and causing safety risks. Kelly said Cathedral Grove, which is west of the fire, was not at imminent risk.

However, she said residents are worried about how long the highway will be closed because it is the main route to and from the city. She added that they do have a plan in place if the highway is closed for a long time, including using float planes and logging roads to move supplies.
