Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announces prohibition of all commercial, recreational and Indigenous bottom contact fishing activities in Howe Sound
Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has announced eight marine refuges in the waters northwest of Vancouver, saying they will help protect newly discovered glass sponge reefs.
The fragile glass sponges of the Hecate Strait are tubular structures whose shape allows them to filter nutrients from seawater. They are only known to form reefs in the waters off the coast of British Columbia.Fisheries and Oceans Canada says prawn and crab traps, shrimp and groundfish trawls, groundfish hook and line, and the use of downrigger gear in recreational salmon trolling are now prohibited within the protected areas.
