Gary Lillico’s petition to make seatbelts mandatory on school buses has 79,000 names — and counting.

The average kindergartner doesn’t understand the relationship between speed, mass and crash severity — or, put another way, the risks associated with standing up to ask the school bus driver a question while he’s driving down the highway at 100 kilometres an hour.

“It struck a chord,” Lillico said of the story. “I told my wife ‘I’ve got to do something,’ and I went online and started a petition.”But the Change.org petition, called Seatbelts for Canadian School Buses, Now!, soon took off, surpassing 1,000 signatures and then 10,000. Less than five months later, it is now up to 78,900 signatures and growing rapidly, gaining almost 6,000 signatures in the last 24 hours.

In a statement, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation said the province is a participant in the task force, and “we will share more information as the task force’s work is finalized.”
