British Columbia's Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, marks the five-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case in the province, reflecting on the challenges and lessons learned during the pandemic. While acknowledging the hardships endured, Henry emphasizes the importance of community support and resilience as British Columbians face new economic and social pressures.

Five years ago, B.C.’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry , announced the very first case of COVID-19 in the province.

We all know what followed: case numbers soared, setting in motion months of public health restrictions and uncertainty, amid the world’s worst pandemic in over a century. “We’ve all been through a very difficult five years. Everybody has suffered,” said Henry. “But we can support each other as we’re getting out of this, and we’re facing the next challenges.”Henry says the current challenges British Columbians are facing aren’t primarily health-related but economic pressures, affordability and housing issues.

“I think back to the day where I coined that phrase about being kind and calm, and I think that is very much who I am, and the importance of that is more so than even when we started this,” said Henry., B.C.’s first case of COVID-19 was announced. Henry led B.C.’s response. She worked with government to balance politics and policy, regularly updating British Columbians on the prevalence of the virus.
