Technical Safety B.C. has assembled a team to assess the safety risks of new low\u002Dcarbon technologies.

This year’s report found that some of the most significant risks to British Columbians’ safety are the risks emerging from continued climate change impacts in communities across the province.

“So with more extreme weather, which includes as we know, flooding, winds, fires, heat, what we need to figure out is how does our current infrastructure of this equipment hold up? And so there’s analytical work and evaluation going on,” said Gothe. “While this incident was resolved without complication, it highlights some of the potential risks that will emerge from climate change,” the report said.resiliency and climate action to respond to emerging safety risks in the months and years ahead.

To address this, the safety authority says it is reviewing installation permits related to Electric Vehicle Energy Management Systems and tracking non-compliance issues to help prevent risks to people or property caused by overloading charging stations. Also, if electric vehicle charging stations are being installed in a strata or apartment buildings the work must be completed by a licensed contractor and the contractor is required to apply for an electrical installation permit prior to work being started, he added.

In 2020, Technical Safety B.C. established a climate action team to manage risks, and support provincial efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the adoption of low-carbon technologies.
