Lana Popham, B.C.'s agriculture minister, has confirmed the detection of H5N1 bird flu in the Capital Regional District. The infection was found in a non-commercial poultry operation on the Saanich Peninsula, leading to regulatory actions and distress among local farmers.

Lana Popham, B.C. ’s agriculture minister , confirmed the, or “ bird flu ,” in the Capital Regional District.

“It was last week that I was alerted there was an infection detected on the Saanich Peninsula. So, of course, it’s upsetting and alarming,” Popham said Wednesday. The CFIA’s website says the H5N1 case involves a non-commercial poultry operation on the peninsula. The federal agency signed an order Wednesday establishing a primary control zone around the area where the disease was detected.Commercial producers are already required to keep their birds indoors, and permits are required to move birds, their products, and by-products.

“I immediately think of the distress the farmers are going through because it’s really devastating, and a lot of these farms are places where they don’t just work but live with whole families,” Popham said. The CFIA says there is currently no treatment for infected birds, with some of the signs including lack of energy, swelling and sudden death. There are trumpeter swans swimming in the distance at Panama Flats.
