Premier David Eby of British Columbia is establishing a new ministry to tackle billions of dollars in cost overruns on government construction projects. The ministry aims to build infrastructure on time and within budget, leveraging government procurement, project timing, and standardized designs to accelerate the construction of essential facilities like schools and hospitals.

“We have an opportunity here to better leverage the scale at which we are investing in public infrastructure for the benefit of the public.” “And so if we are really going to build more, faster, if we are going to build these big infrastructure projects on time and on budget, we’ve got to change the model. Because, in our view, the infrastructure procurement model is broken. And we’re all paying a very significant price.”
The NDP has evolved the CBA system into new project labour agreements, but they aren’t much better, said Gardiner.
