Pharmacists in British Columbia will soon be able to renew prescriptions for those without a family doctor and prescribe medication for a range of ailments not previously allowed.

The B.C. government announced Thursday that beginning Oct. 14, pharmacists will be able to renew any prescription for people who’ve lost their family doctor for up to two years.

Pharmacists will also be able to issue prescriptions for contraception as well as less acute ailments such as allergies, indigestion, urinary tract infections and acne starting in 2023. Under the current system, someone with a urinary tract infection must be assessed and treated by a primary care provider such as a family doctor or ER doctor.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.Furthermore, a person will be able to visit their local pharmacy for assessment and recommendations on treatment.

The move is expected to help take pressure off the province’s primary care system and reduce emergency room wait times.
