Arthur Roberts received eight months in jail for defacing Congregation Emanu-El, the oldest continually operating synagogue in North America, in Victoria, B.C., in 2025.
A British Columbia man who defaced a historic Victoria synagogue with what a judge called unquestionably hateful statements has been sentenced to eight months in jail. Arthur Roberts, 54, pleaded guilty to mischief and uttering threats after admitting he defaced the Congregation Emanu-El synagogue in downtown Victoria in the summer of 2025, according to a ruling by B.C. provincial court Judge Micah Rankin released this week.
The ruling describes Congregation Emanu-El as the oldest continually operating synagogue on the west coast of North America, founded in 1859. A congregant discovered graffiti in small lettering outside the building's vestibule last August.
Hate Crime Findings in Victoria Synagogue Case
Rankin found that Roberts committed a hate crime by intending to expose Jewish people to a hateful message upon entering their place of worship. The ruling states that Roberts admitted to defacing the religious site with messages describing Jewish people as evil, monsters and child murderers.
The judge wrote that the fact the offence involved damage to a religious edifice, coupled with antisemitic hate speech, is highly aggravating. He also found that the words used identified Jews themselves, rather than the State of Israel, its government or its military, as the object of condemnation.
The judge acknowledged that criticism of the State of Israel, even extremely harsh criticism, is not itself necessarily antisemitic. However, he wrote that it is the collective attribution of responsibility to all Jews for the actions of Israel that renders the words antisemitic.
Rankin noted that Roberts may have been subjectively motivated to deface the synagogue over the events in Gaza, but the message he left targeted Jewish people directly rather than the Israeli state.
Arrest, Sentence and Impact on Congregants
Victoria police officers arrested Roberts on Aug. 22, 2025, after the release of CCTV footage led to him being identified by a member of the public. The ruling handed down in Victoria on Monday imposed six months for the mischief charge and another two months for an uttering threats charge.
The threats charge arose after Roberts sent his mother a text message in June 2026 expressing a desire to kill police. The judge described Roberts as an extremely isolated 54-year-old man with mental-health problems and noted that he expressed remorse for his actions.
The ruling said the effect on congregants was profoundly negative, including on attendees of a bar mitzvah held the day after Roberts defaced the building. That event took place amid what the ruling describes as the broader context of increasing antisemitic incidents across Canada.
The sentence reflects the court's finding that the vandalism targeted a religious community and compounded harm at a time when such incidents are rising nationally. Congregation Emanu-El, founded in 1859, has stood in downtown Victoria for more than 160 years and remains an active place of worship.
