“It’s pretty clear that we’re looking at the areas that everybody knows have serious housing challenges,” Davidoff said. “The list seems to obviously be pretty light on small municipalities in the Interior, for example, or the northern parts of Vancouver Island.”
Krog said he’s pleased Nanaimo wasn’t in the “top 10 bad list, because, candidly, we’re processing enormous numbers of building permits and approvals already. We don’t need a list or an incentive.”Article content If communities don’t meet the targets within six months, the province will appoint an independent adviser to help them make progress. If that doesn’t work, the province will wield a bigger stick and overrule the municipality with the power to rezone entire neighbourhoods to create more density.
Jamie Squires, president of Fifth Avenue Real Estate Marketing, said she’s encouraged that the full list of municipalities includes a balance of housing “producers and non-producers.”
