“What is the deadline to have service – is it one year, or two years?” asks Phil Mader, a Nelson resident who can’t get to Creston to visit his girlfriend.
The heart may have wings, but the Nelson man is without wheels, making it almost impossible for him to visit his girlfriend in Creston since Greyhound withdrew its bus service from B.C. at the end of October.
Earlier this week, Rider Express Transportation, an inter-city bus service from Saskatchewan that has been running a Vancouver-to-Calgary route along the Trans-Canada Highway, applied to the Passenger Transportation Board to reduce its service east of Kamloops from one daily trip to one weekly trip, eliminating several stops. The company also applied to add routes around Kelowna.
“We heard from residents when Greyhound made their announcement. People were asking how they were going to get around,” said Heinrich. For Mader, who tries to visit Creston at least once a month, the biggest issue is the availability of rides at the right times. He believes the provincial and federal governments are waiting too long for private enterprise to take over the abandoned bus routes, which may never be financially viable.
