Here\u0027s your weekly roundup of climate change news for the week of April 11 to April 17, 2022.
Metro Vancouver’s last remaining glacier is rapidly shrinking because of human-induced climate change and could disappear within three decades, says a geoscientist.
“But now the changes are quite dramatic … there are way more crevices and more water running off in the summer. There’s a piece that’s carved up, it’s just broken right off.” The rapid retreat of the glaciers means more geo-hazards like increased flooding from melting ice and landslides. When they are gone in the future there will be more issues with creeks and rivers running low or drying up during late summer.
“I’ve been involved in this movement for over a year, mostly just doing city stuff, rallies and it’s not working, nothing’s changed. And so I really wanted to be a part of Save Old Growth, that’s taken it up a notch and I’m willing to get arrested today. I’ve got a 25 year old and I’m really worried about her future,” said protester Penny Crawford, in a statement released Saturday by the group.
The Extinction Rebellion had said on its website that it planned to block a major Parisian location to disrupt the electoral cycle and its “business as usual” attitude. “We are scientists and academics who believe we should expose the reality and severity of the climate and ecological emergency by engaging in non-violent civil disobedience,” they write.
