But Mayor Brenda Locke stands firm on reverting to RCMP

Asked about how much funding the province was willing to provide, Farnworth noted that five years at $30 million was a total of $150 million.

The binding provincial conditions on returning to the RCMP include putting in place a strategic implementation adviser, individualized human resource plans for municipal Surrey Police Service officers to ensure there is not a mass exodus, and a revised city plan that does not prioritize Surrey RCMP re-staffing over other RCMP vacancies in the province. It also includes appointing senior RCMP officers to provide oversight of restaffing Surrey who are not part of the day-to-day operations.

“If the city decides to stay with the RCMP, I’ve been offered the full support of the commissioner and national headquarters. And I believe with confidence that we can meet those conditions,” said McDonald. If the city decides to continue the transition, a strategic implementation adviser must also be put in place and there would be provincial oversight of hiring to ensure that officers are not drawn down from other forces in B.C.considered, comprehensive, and evidence-based recommendation.
