San Diego State's leading scorer Matt Bradley sprains his wrist in practice, could miss intrasquad scrimmage
He wasn’t pointing fingers or casting blame, rather noting the final schedule twice poses logistical challenges with back-to-back road games in altitude less than 72 hours apart.
The problem is for a sea level team heading into the mountains, the body needs two or three weeks to fully acclimate to the rarefied air. The next best thing, studies have shown, is to arrive within 24 hours of the game. “Those are tough, they’re not easy,” Dutcher said of spending multiple days in the mountains. “It’s not that are sitting there, hands on knees, gasping for breath, like they’re going to pass out. It’s just that they’re a half-step slow to a play, and in basketball if you’re a half-step slow to a play, you’re usually not going to have a great result.”
“Chartering, if we’re able to charter, might help us win a game or two. We’ll look at the budget and see what it looks like and whether we can realistically charter to a couple more games this year.” There are logistical problems, though. The only nonstop flight to San Diego from Albuquerque on Feb. 26 is at 3:55 p.m. So do you change planes and spend the day flying, or do you spend that day traveling to Boise and practice there for two days? The Aztecs lucked out last year in a similar situation, scheduled to play at Wyoming on Jan. 12 and at New Mexico on Jan. 15.
