San Diego State quarterback under concussion protocol, but has practiced the past two days in progression toward playing

San Diego State quarterback Braxton Burmeister practiced both Monday and Tuesday and can be expected to play Saturday night against Hawaii if he continues to progress.

Behind Burmeister, the quarterback room includes junior Jalen Mayden, who moved Monday from safety back to quarterback, along with true freshman Liu Aumavae and sophomore walk-on DJ Ralph. Hoke wasn’t ready to identify the line of succession — whether Aumavae or Mayden is next in line — if Burmeister is injured again.Mayden has three seasons of backup experience between Mississippi State and SDSU before moving to safety in the spring. Aumavae graduated from high school in Utah early so he could be on campus a semester early and has been practicing with the Aztecs at quarterback since spring camp.

Hoke said he and Hecklinski spoke on Thursday, a day before the Boise State game, about the situation with the SDSU offense, which had fallen to 117th in the nation.
