Retired educators Becky Barrera and Merri Gutierrez are the inspirational force behind San Antonio's El Día de los Niños festival, set for Saturday.

, the educational and cultural celebration is critical for Mexican American and other Latino students, whose histories have not been adequately integrated into school curricula or publishing.

Celebrations now take place in more than 200 U.S. cities – where neighborhoods, schools, libraries and community groups stage educational, cultural and musical events.Over time, El Día de los Niños’ narratives have been translated into more than a dozen languages., but Niños remains too little known, even in San Antonio.

At the festival, they’ve been transformed into small art pieces created from colorful construction paper, each containing a message written by a child.as a child’s goal for the future or a wish for the present . The day’s events will include performances by singer-songwriter Tish Hinojosa and students of the Network for Young Artists.Barrera was lead author of Amanecer , the first bilingual curriculum for the national Head Start program, and the Scholastic Early Childhood Workshop, adopted by more than 75 percent of pre-kindergarten programs in Texas and California.
