Hazlett/San Antonio Express-NewsIn 1986, when the future king of England visited San Antonio for the second time, he was a prince struggling with his marriage to a young princess and, as we now know, still in love with a woman who’d ultimately become his queen.For a good part of a day, Prince Charles toured San Antonio and rode in the back of a car with a former mayor.Cisneros was no longer mayor in ’86. Lila Cockrell was, and she assigned him the task of showing a prince around the city.
But on that visit, he was interested in issues “that relate to human capital,” Cisneros said, “dealing with services to people, children, those who were marginalized.” They ended up on the West Side, where so many groups and nonprofits serve the city’s poorest residents with early childhood development programs, childcare, housing, food pantries and other services.It’s also where Cisneros offices and helps lead several business interests, including American Triple I, which stands for infrastructure, innovation and investment. He founded the company.
It raises institutional capital to invest in infrastructure projects that need private capital, such as two JFK International Airport terminals that serve JetBlue; a heavy rail project that’ll link the LAX airport area with the San Fernando Valley; and upgrades to cargo facilities in several major airports.The elder Cisneros, a former secretary of housing in the Clinton administration, maintains a demanding schedule.
