Jacquelyn Mills: “It's just such a mysterious place for the most part." PHOTO CREDIT-JOHN RATCHFORD - PHOTO CREDIT-JOHN RATCHFORDSYDNEY, N.S. — Jacquelyn Mills counts herself as lucky for being one of the few people to visit the marvel of nature stuck in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean known as Sable Island.
Mills first learned of Sable Island through news reports in her youth and it immediately captured her imagination. She would spend many days wondering about the herd of wild horses, the colony of seals and its migratory bird sanctuary. Shipwrecks also added to its myth and legend for her, as did Lucas, a naturalist and environmentalist, who studied the island.
There were two weeks in December 2017, three weeks in September 2018 and three more weeks in June 2019, which Mills said is not a lot of time to make a feature film, so she had to make the most of every moment. Mills found herself seeking out eco-friendly cameras and microphones to create a film in harmony with the natural world.
