Friends and colleagues have identified Calgarian and outdoorsman Dana Coffield as the man killed in an avalanche in Yoho National Park on the weekend.

Darren Engels, who met Coffield through their work in the oil and gas industry, described his late friend as “a class act” and “a very avid outdoorsman,” even scaling Mount Everest in 1990. Coffield was a geologist and CEO of Gran Tierra Energy Inc. from 2005 to 2015. When he was terminated from the company, Coffield told Postmedia he planned to spend time skiing in the mountains before considering returning to the industry.
