In another instance of state-sponsored hostage-taking, Belarusian dissident blogger Roman Protasevich, flying from a conference in Athens to his home in Lithuania on May 23, was arrested after Belarusian authorities used an alleged bomb threat to force the Ryanair plane to be diverted and land in Minsk. Protasevich’s kidnapping been condemned worldwide and sanctions have been imposed on Belarus.
Arbitrary arrests, kidnappings and state-sponsored hostage-takings have prompted global allies to join Canada in a joint declaration against this growing trend.
