Avatar 3, 4, and 5 will expand the world of Pandora, but the comparisons to planets from the Star Wars movies could end up being a big problem.
The Avatar franchise has often been compared to the Star Wars movies, but Avatar 3, 4, and 5 are turning that connection into a major problem. While many elements of Avatar and Star Wars differ, such as the story, characters, and music, the two sci-fi franchises definitely have some major parallels. Because of this, the upcoming Avatar sequels may be treading a little too closely to Star Wars, creating a big problem for James Cameron's beloved movie series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The original Avatar came out in 2009, and it was a massive critical and commercial success, with the film even becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Surprisingly, though, a sequel didn't come out until 2022, when Avatar: The Way of Water was released. Luckily, the wait for further Avatar sequels won't be long, as Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 are all set to come out within the next few years.
The concept art for Avatar's volcanic area looks a lot like Mustafar, the iconic volcanic planet from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Similarly, the Arctic region looks a lot like Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back. The desert region even looks like Tatooine, one of the most iconic planets in Star Wars. The desert presents a unique problem, as desert planets are an all-too-common trope in sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Dune.
Can Avatar Sequels' New Pandora Locations Avoid The Star Wars Problem? Due to the similarity between these locations, the only way that Avatar can avoid this problem is by differentiating itself from Star Wars. Luckily, it should have no problem doing that. James Cameron's worldbuilding is one of the highlights of the franchise, with Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water providing gorgeous vistas that draw viewers in.
One of the biggest ways that Avatar can make itself stand out is through its wildlife. Avatar movies spend lots of time setting up unique animals and plants that perfectly fit into their environments, and Avatar 3, 4, and 5 can once again do just that. Star Wars doesn't use its alien creatures nearly as uniquely as Avatar, giving the James Cameron franchise one big leg up. Despite their similarities, Avatar has a clear path to avoid copying Star Wars too much.
