All Rights Reserved.CLEVELAND, Ohio-- James Cameron’s follow-up to 2009′s “Avatar” has reached a new box office milestone, with more than $1 billion in global ticket sales in less than two weeks. The Disney and 20th Century film comes 13 years after the first movie’s release.
Only three movies released in 2022 -- “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World Dominion,” and “The Way of Water” -- have cleared that benchmark,However, the original “Avatar” remains the highest-grossing release in history, with $2.97 billion worldwide. The sequel follows the Sully family, as they venture underwater to protect the Na’vi from humans. Reprising their roles from the first film are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver. Joining them are Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement.
Despite its overwhelming success, the movie has drawn its fair share of criticism. Indigenous communities have slammed the film for its continued “glamorization of colonialism and racist depiction of Native people and culture,”
