Avalanche danger is still 'considerable' in area of fatal Tuesday slide.

Preliminary report released on fatal avalanche near Summit LakeANCHORAGE, Alaska - An avalanche that killed an Anchorage man and injured two others was triggered by a slab of snow that broke off about 200 feet above the men as they were climbing in the Kenai Mountains, according to avalanche officials.

All three men were buried by the avalanche, but the two survivors freed themselves on their own. Allen was found partially buried and given CPR; he died before he could be taken to a hospital. “It is right along the Seward Highway, so we are watching those slopes all the time, and it took people, which is an added load onto a snowpack, to actually trigger that avalanche,” Wagner said. “So it was a bad combination of the weather increasing the avalanche danger and then people on a slope at the wrong time.”
