“It’s anyone’s spot right now,” said the 21-year-old Alex Newhook, who’s battling to replace Nazem Kadri as the center on the Stanley Cup champions’ second line.

Working mostly out of the third or second lines for the Stanley Cup champions, the speedy Newhook recorded 33 points in 71 games while averaging 13:34 of ice time during the regular season. Those minutes dipped — 12 games, four points, 10:43 of ice time per game — during the Avs’ long playoff run last spring, but coach Jared Bednar remains optimistic Newhook can hit another gear with more playing time.
“I think there’s some growth in his game that still has to come,” Bednar noted earlier this month. “I think consistency is one thing, making sure that he’s a difference-maker on a nightly basis. We see flashes of it. He’s been responsible in the role we’ve given him. But now his role is going to change here, especially at the start of the year, and hopefully handles it well and continues to grow.
