The U.S. government has implemented automatic registration for the Selective Service for men aged 18-25, a move primarily aimed at cost savings. Despite the change, the likelihood of a draft in the context of the Iran conflict remains low due to sufficient military personnel and the nature of current operations.
The move has little practical effect, as most U.S. men between 18 and 25 are already required to register for. The automatic registration was pitched as a cost-saving measure, and one that “transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,”The rule change was submitted on March 30 and came as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.
