The steady rise in infections has turned up the heat on authorities to procure emergency vaccine supplies. "We have the supply, we think we've got the distribution network and now it really comes down to people stepping forward, getting booked in and getting vaccinated," Frewen told local broadcaster ABC.South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced plans to introduce Covid-19 "vaccine passports" amid widespread scepticism of the jab, ahead of an easing of movement restrictions this week.

But he added that "a sustained decline in infections... over the last few weeks" would allow for an easing of confinement measures from Monday.
