First-ever speedcubing competition in P.E.I. draws large crowd | SaltWire #rubikscube #charlottetownAuston Matthews is that close to becoming the first 70-goal scorer in the National Hockey League since 1992-93.

Drew O’Connor tied the game at 13:38 of the third when he tapped a loose puck over the goal line. O’Connor got in behind the goalie and managed to avoid the check of McCabe. Once the Leafs got through some penalty trouble, they were able to keep a hungry Penguins team at bay until O’Connor scored. Kyle Dubas’ new group is in a mighty fight for an Eastern Conference wild card, but the Leafs are the better team and only want to keep steaming ahead with the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs looming. They’ve won seven of their past 10 games.

Matthew Knies also scored for the Leafs, tapping a terrific pass from TJ Brodie past Nedeljkovic at 5:36 of the second period. At 18:06 of the first, Rickard Rakell gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead following a turnover by Leafs defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin in the defensive end.And put Sidney Crosby in the group — everyone in the NHL, more or less — that’s in awe of Matthews’ chase for 70 goals.

Samsonov made a toe save on ex-Leaf Michael Bunting from the slot as the Leafs killed off a Simon Benoit minor, and minutes later, stretched across the crease to make a tough stop on Crosby with Lyubushkin sitting in the box. There is no goaltending controversy in Toronto. All signs point to Samsonov being in net for Game 1 of the playoffs against, in all likelihood, the Florida Panthers.

Tavares, and Matthews at times, were assigned to keeping an eye on Crosby whenever he was on the ice.
