Making naloxone easily accessible will save lives, experts say.
, which grants Pennsylvania residents who are addicted to opioids access to the medication.
Community events at which naloxone is distributed are also on the rise, Dr. Vakharia says. These events are coordinated by local organizations that teach residents what an overdose looks and feels like as well as how to administer the medication—typically via injection or via nasal spray—to someone experiencing an overdose. “It’s a great work-around and it’s helped get naloxone into our communities, but it still has limitations,” Dr. Vakharia says.
, which can distribute naloxone as well as other supplies people with addiction need access to, like clean syringes. The problem with all these naloxone bypasses is that they require the foresight to get naloxoneit’s needed. Accessing naloxone from a pharmacy through a standing order, at a community event, or by mail are all good options if you already know you or someone close to you is at risk of an overdose.
But there are few options for accessing naloxone in a moment of crisis—you would need to call for emergency help. “Calling 911 is synonymous with calling the cops, and that is a huge deterrent for calling 911,” Dr. Vakharia says. “You shouldn’t have to be afraid to call 911 because your friend is dying,” but many people are, she explains. “They see drug users—so-called criminals—they might see a scale, baggies, syringes.

Strategy-Making in Turbulent TimesIn the traditional strategic-planning model, managers attempt to forecast how markets will evolve and competitors will respond, and then define a multiyear plan to position their company to win in this future state. That worked well when markets were more stable and the primary factors influencing future growth and profitability were easier to forecast. But the world is now changing so quickly that no business can plan for every eventuality.
