Engineering firm Aurecon says the developing use of artificial intelligence could supercharge efficiency on big projects.
Already a subscriber?Aurecon is using artificial intelligence to help build bridges. In response to a question typed into a chat-style interface about the best structural form for a 40-metre span, the engineering consultancy’s in-house platform draws information from a range of documents to generate reliable answers.
It turns out Recall doesn’t have an answer about 40-metre spans specifically – Aurecon doesn’t have a document in its library for that. The platform makes this clear and instead offers a range of design suggestions and factors to consider such as the cost of steel versus concrete, aesthetics, long-term maintenance considerations and says further analysis is necessary.
Biases in AI are hard to detect, he says. “They don’t emerge until you really start looking for them deeply. But managed properly, the productivity benefits for the built environment industry of AI could be great, Mackenzie says.
