The Athletics are hoping for a relatively quick return for right-handed starter Mason Miller with a `mild’ UCL sprain, but there are no guarantees.
OAKLAND — Prize prospect Mason Miller was diagnosed with a “mild” UCL sprain in his right elbow, and while the injury falls far short of a tear and the resulting Tommy John surgery, his absence could be a lengthy one.Miller visited with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas, the same doctor who repaired 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy’s right elbow and who has treated pitchers for years.
Kotsay, who said he hadn’t spoken to Miller, thought there was nothing in error with the A’s original diagnosis. Miller was a late bloomer in college after learning he had Type 1 diabetes. Once he learned to deal with the condition, Miller put on weight and saw his velocity skyrocket. But he missed most of the 2022 season with a shoulder strain, only to impress the A’s in the Arizona Fall League with pitches exceeding 100 miles per hour.
