In “American People,” all 13 of the artist’s “French Collection” quilts—which effectively rewrote the history of modern art, imagining the life of a fictional Black artist and model in 1920s Paris—will be reunited for the first time in nearly 25 years; as will the graphicAmerican People Series #19: U.S. Postage Stamp Commemorating the Advent of Black Power, three large-scale murals created for the Spectrum Gallery—a cooperative space overseen by the poet and critic Robert Newman—in 1967.
